KUCHING (Jan 27): Immediate and coordinated measures are being stepped up to mitigate frequent flooding in Matu and surrounding areas following a special meeting involving 12 government agencies.

The meeting, held at the Sarawak Forest Department headquarters yesterday, was chaired by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya.

Among the agencies represented were the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development, Sarawak Forest Department, Land and Survey Department, Mukah Resident’s Office, as well as other relevant departments.

Juanda, in a statement today, said all feedback, advice and recommendations put forward by the respective agencies would be used as key references in formulating concrete measures to mitigate the recurring floods affecting Matu, Jemoreng and Passin.

He added that plantation licence holders and road contractors were also summoned to explain the mitigation steps already taken, ongoing efforts, and further actions required to reduce flood risks in the affected areas.

Emphasising the importance of safeguarding public interest, Juanda said all development activities, including road construction and land works, must strictly comply with existing laws and take environmental factors into consideration.

“Every development has an impact on surrounding communities, particularly on the environment, and this must be carefully managed to prevent flooding from worsening,” he said.

The meeting yielded positive outcomes, with the flooding issue identified as a priority and all involved agencies agreeing to take immediate action to mitigate flood risks.

It also provided an opportunity for the chair to engage directly with stakeholders and convey his views in the interest of residents affected by frequent flooding.
