KUCHING, May 5: The reactivation of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) system in Batu Kitang, featuring 18 surveillance cameras installed at strategic locations including Arang Road, Dogan and surrounding areas, marks a significant step towards strengthening community safety in the area.

In a TVS news, Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang described the initiative as a meaningful milestone for the constituency.

“A day to remember. I would not call it a historic day, but a day to remember because we have just installed CCTV in this area,” he said when officiating the Batu Kitang Constituency CCTV Installation Programme here today.

He said the 18 cameras are now fully operational, with capabilities that include identifying vehicle registration numbers and capturing clear facial images.

“With this system functioning today, I am very confident that crime in N13 Batu Kitang can be reduced,” he added.

Lo also noted that the system is able to record and store vehicle movement data for up to 28 days, strengthening monitoring and investigative efforts.

He said the involvement of Sarawak-based companies in the development and maintenance of the system sets it apart from earlier implementations that had faced operational challenges.

He added that cooperation with agencies such as the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) and the Sarawak Integrated Operation Centre (SIOC) allows for faster monitoring and response without reliance on external parties.

In addition, a community-based approach has been introduced through the formation of a “local care commitment group” involving residents, enforcement agencies and the CCTV system as part of an integrated safety network.

“This initiative is seen as a pilot project with the potential to be expanded throughout Kuching, in line with the State government’s aspiration to develop a large-scale smart security system in Sarawak,” he said. — DayakDaily
