SIBU (Oct 16): A total of 2,517 eligible police retirees have received their Pingat Jasa Pahlawan Negara (PJPN) service medals since 2014.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mancha Ata said the medals were presented by the Sarawak police contingent through 17 series of PJPN presentation ceremonies and five non-ceremonial functions.
“There are still a total of 1,218 eligible police retirees who have not received their PJPN.
“Some of them refused to attend the PJPN presentation ceremony due to health issues and other reasons.
“They will receive their medals without a ceremony,” he said in a statement after presenting the medals to 203 recipients during the Series 5/2024 PJPN presentation ceremony held at University of Technology Sarawak here today.
Mancha said Series 5/2024 of the medal presentation is the last one to be held in a ceremonial manner.
He said after this, the Sarawak police contingent will delegate the authority to the district police chiefs to present the medal without a ceremony at their respective police headquarters or at the recipient’s house.
This is in accordance with the Director of Management directive dated July 22, 2021 KPN Reference (PR) 57/27, he added.
In today’s ceremony, 121 recipients received the medal in person and 82 were represented by their next of kin.
Leading the list of the recipients was former commanding officer of the 12th Battalion of General Operations Force (GOF) Miri, Assistant Police Commissioner (Retired) Fauzi Saadi Diol, 73.
“Series 5/2024 is held in Sibu due to the majority of the recipients residing in the central region area.
“It is for their convenience to attend the award presentation ceremony,” he said.
Commenting further, Mancha said PJPN is awarded in recognition of heroism, sacrifice, and service to the nation during the emergency in Malaya from July 12, 1948 to July 21, 1960 and during the communist insurgency era from June 17, 1968 to December 2, 1989.
Those who served during the Emergency Service Era from 1962 to October 17, 1990 in Sabah and Sarawak are also eligible to receive the medal.
