PUSA, March 18: The 29.5-kilometre Sarawak Coastal Road Project under Package A5, spanning from Batang Saribas 2 Bridge to Roban junction, has reached 61.81 per cent physical completion and is on track for full completion by the first quarter of 2027.

In a TVS news, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the project is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and spur economic growth in the Betong Division.

“The Sarawak government remains firmly committed to delivering this project on schedule. Despite facing various technical challenges on the ground, progress to date has been encouraging,” he said when met at the pre-launch ceremony of the Sungai Krian Bridge today.

Uggah, who is also the Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, explained that the package involves the construction of a new road alignment beginning after the Batang Saribas Bridge in Kuala Saribas and extending to Roban junction, linking directly to the Pan Borneo Highway.

Key components of the project include site clearing, the development of temporary road diversions, earthworks involving soil and rock excavation, as well as the construction of concrete retaining structures and slope stabilisation measures.

In addition, a comprehensive drainage system is being implemented, incorporating culverts, roadside drains, cross drains and other related infrastructure to ensure efficient water flow and mitigate flood risks.

The project also encompasses the construction of a major intersection, a bridge across a drainage channel, asphalt road paving complete with shoulders, and the installation of road furniture.

Environmental considerations remain a priority, with the implementation of an Environmental Management Plan (EMP), alongside continuous monitoring and control of erosion and sedimentation throughout the construction phase.

“A traffic management plan is also in place, including dedicated traffic management teams and temporary road facilities to ensure the safety of all road users,” he added.
The government anticipates that the project will deliver substantial benefits to local communities by improving accessibility, shortening travel time, and driving socio-economic development along Sarawak’s coastal corridor.

Uggah further highlighted that the RM112.5 million Sungai Krian Bridge represents a historic milestone for residents in Betong’s coastal areas, who previously depended on ferry services.

“The bridge will not only ease daily commuting but is also expected to generate positive socio-economic impact for the surrounding communities,” he said.— DayakDaily
