KUCHING, June 23: A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to multiple jail terms after crashing through a police roadblock and injuring a senior police officer during an integrated crime prevention operation in Jalan Padungan here early Saturday morning.
Kuching District Police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the incident occurred at about 2.40am on June 20 when the suspect drove through an integrated crime prevention operation roadblock before striking an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) who was on duty.
The officer sustained injuries to the waist and suffered abrasions to his right elbow. He was subsequently taken to Sarawak General Hospital for further treatment.
Following the collision, the suspect fled the scene.
“Through police intelligence and follow-up action, the suspect was successfully arrested at approximately 7am on the same day at Jalan Bintara, Samariang.
“Preliminary urine screening revealed that the suspect tested positive for Amphetamine, Methamphetamine, Ketamine and Benzodiazepine.
“Police checks also found that the suspect had six previous criminal records involving various offences,” Alexson said in a statement today.
On June 22, the suspect was charged in the Kuching Court under Section 26(2) of the Police Act 1967 and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
He was also charged under Section 332 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from performing his duty and sentenced to one year in prison.
In addition, he was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of public functions.
Alexson said the suspect will face a further charge under Section 44(1A)(a) of the Road Transport Act 1987 on a date to be determined.
He reminded motorists to comply with instructions issued during roadblocks and refrain from driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
“Such actions endanger not only other road users but also enforcement personnel carrying out their duties,” he stressed. — DayakDaily
