KUCHING, Oct 14: A 36-year-old bridge serving 16 longhouses and a primary school in Sarikei needs to be rebuilt to meet the growing needs of rural communities, Repok assemblyman Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii said today.

Built in 1990, Sungai Lepong Bridge measures 28 metres long and 4.2 metres wide, but its existing structure no longer meets current needs of residents utilising the bridge, he said.

He said bridges were vital links for Sarikei residents, supporting their daily activities as well as the movement of goods and services.

Huang made the proposal during the debate on the Sarawak Supply (2027) Bill, 2026, at the State Legislative Assembly (DUS) Complex here today.

He proposed that the Sarawak government reconstruct the bridge to ensure rural communities continued to have safe and reliable access to essential services.

“A safe and reliable bridge is essential to ensure services could be delivered efficiently,” he said. —DayakDaily
