KUCHING, Oct 31: The anti-slip epoxy flake coating on the ground floor of 3rd Mile Market, completed just over a week ago, has come off and needs to be entirely removed for rectification measures to be made.
Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai explained that water seepage beneath the surface has weakened the bond, leading to the peeling of the epoxy layer.
“We recognise that the selection of this anti-slip epoxy flake coating was inappropriate, as it was proposed by the contractor and is being used for the first time by the Council for market flooring,” he said in a statement following his visit to the market, where he addressed public complaints about the peeling epoxy.
As a result, payment to the contractor will be withheld until the defect is rectified.
The RM300,000 project is funded by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government Malaysia (KPKT), which mandates that all markets have anti-slip flooring.
Tan emphasised that the contractor has been instructed to scrape and remove all existing epoxy flake flooring and will submit a proposed method for the rectification to MPP for approval.
“The Council will keep the hawkers at 3rd Mile Market updated on the rectification works,” he assured.
This initiative is part of a broader improvement project aimed at enhancing safety for both visitors and vendors.
The new coating was intended to provide additional grip, significantly reducing the risk of slips and falls, particularly in areas prone to wet conditions.
In addition to the flooring upgrade, the project includes several other enhancements, such as constructing staircase awnings, replacing the polycarbonate upper roofing, painting the first-floor ceiling and parapet wall, and waterproofing both upper and lower roof slabs.
Tan also reported that, as of Oct 25, the work progress on 3rd Mile Market is at 86 per cent, with the contract completion scheduled for Nov 14, 2024.
