SIBU: The third edition of the Sarawak Games (SUKSAR) to be held here is set to kick off today, Jan 15.

Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) chief executive officer Awang Putrayusrie Awang Redzuan said that all preparations, including those for the competition venues for the 13 sports, are progressing smoothly.

“The preparations have been running smoothly, and the launching ceremony will be held on Monday,” he said.

He said this after inspecting the athletes’ accommodation at Desa Sanyan on Saturday.

Awang further said approximately 1,600 athletes, including managers and coaches leading each zone’s team, are expected to camp here for four to five days during the games.

“I thus encourage spectators and the local community around Sibu to come and witness the games and liven up the sports venues,” he said.

The Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) director also acknowledged that the vastness and geographical features of Sarawak pose challenges to every contingent participating in this SUKSAR.

“However, I am pleased that each contingent is committed to sending their athletes to participate in the games to showcase their talents, with the hope of representing Sarawak at the upcoming Malaysia Games (SUKMA),” he said.

He added the cooperation and commitment from government agencies, the private sector, sports associations, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have played a significant role in the success of organising this SUKSAR.

“Having said that, my hope for the competing athletes is that they demonstrate high sportsmanship and discipline throughout the event. I also encourage the athletes to use this opportunity to showcase their talents,” he said.

He also said the experience gained during SUKSAR can be a valuable one to prepare before reaching higher levels.

The 3rd Sarawak Games will take place from Jan 15 to 18, featuring 13 sports events, including weightlifting, cycling, volleyball, basketball, futsal, indoor hockey, judo, karate, pencak silat, sepak takraw, taekwondo, boxing, and wushu.
