Julau District Police chief Deputy Superintendent Alif Haiqal Ramesh Abdullah said the man was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder with intent to cause death.

Upon conviction, the offence carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane if the death sentence is not imposed.

He added that the accused also faces a separate charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation against the victim’s child.

“In addition, the suspect has been charged under Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960 for discharging a firearm outside a licensed shooting range,” he said in a statement today.

Alif Haiqal said bail was not offered as the case is classified as a non-bailable offence under the Penal Code.

The accused will remain in custody pending further proceedings.

The court fixed May 5, 2026, for case mention. The prosecution is led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Aiman Zarith Zahrulail.

The fatal incident on Feb 24 is believed to have stemmed from a dispute involving a firearm. The victim was shot at close range at about 11am while washing his feet after returning from an oil palm plantation. He sustained severe injuries to his right shoulder.

The suspect, a fellow longhouse resident, allegedly emerged suddenly from one of the rooms and fired a single shot at the victim using a 12-bore single-barrel break-action (SBBL) shotgun. — DayakDaily
