45 journos attend course on new media

KUCHING: The Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) successfully conducted its two-day ‘Journalism in a New Media World’ course starting Oct 9 at the Riverside Majestic Hotel, here.

A total of 45 media practitioners from Kuching, Sibu, and Miri participated, including Sarawak Tribune’s chief reporter Natasha Jee, digital chief Sarah Hafizan Chandra, and reporters Nura Valentina Lorna and James Wong.

The course, sponsored by the Sarawak government, was organised in collaboration with the Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA), Sibu Journalists Association (SJA), and Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA).

It was led by Sharanjit Singh, executive editor of the New Straits Times, and its Group editor Farrah Naz Karim.

KDJA president Ronnie Teo said newer journalists gained valuable skills in essential reporting, fact-checking, and verification, while senior reporters benefited from the refresher training.

“We also learnt advanced reporting techniques and digital adaptation in today’s reporting world, as well as how to enhance our skills in investigative reporting and in-depth journalism.

“We are thankful to MPI and the Sarawak government for their continuous support towards developing the media industry here in Sarawak,” he said in a statement.

In addition to journalism skills, participants gained insight into investigative journalism tools and techniques, as well as the crucial role of the media in upholding public interest.
