KUCHING, Mar 8: Following the incident whereby a man was killed after being crushed by a concrete block during a load testing procedure at a school construction site in Simunjan on Feb 27, the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Sarawak issued six prohibition notices to the employer to halt the related work until appropriate safety control measures are implemented.

In a press release, the department said that based on preliminary findings, the incident occurred during an operation to move concrete blocks from the top of an I-Beam structure to the ground using a lorry loader crane.

It also indicated that the victim was a 67-year-old local victim was not an employee of the subcontractor company involved.

“While the lifting operation was being carried out, the victim’s colleague heard the victim shouting before discovering him pinned under one of the concrete blocks located on the I-Beam structure.

“The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical team from Simunjan Hospital. The victim’s body was handed over to the police for further action,” said the department.

The case is being investigated under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 1994.

Legal action will be taken against any party found responsible if violations of the Act are identified, with penalties of a fine not exceeding RM500,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or both. — DayakDaily
