KUCHING (Dec 22): A total of 700 police officers will be deployed statewide under the Road Safety Advocacy Campaign in conjunction with the Christmas celebrations from Dec 23-28.
Sarawak Deputy Police Commissioner DCP Saifullizan Ishak said the six-day campaign is carried out through the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department.
“Officers will focus on traffic law enforcement, particularly at accident-prone locations to ensure smooth and controlled traffic flow, as well as conduct advocacy activities to raise public awareness on road safety and the importance of complying with traffic regulations,” he said at a press conference after a meet-and-greet session at Farley Kuching here yesterday.
He said the campaign involved all branches and departments under the Sarawak Police Contingent, with personnel drawn from various units to support enforcement and engagement efforts.
“Road users are advised to observe traffic rules and comply with instructions from enforcement officers on duty throughout the Christmas festive season. Stern action will be taken against those found violating traffic laws,” he said.
On flood preparedness, Saifullizan said the police were ready to face the northeast monsoon, and necessary arrangements were already in place.
“This is not the first time we are facing such a situation, as similar conditions occurred last year. However, we hope the planning and preparedness in place will enable us to manage any challenges should they arise,” he said.
He added the 700 personnel deployed will focus primarily on road safety, while special teams are on standby for monsoon-related incidents.
“Currently, Alhmadulillah, there are no flood incidents reported across Sarawak. We hope this situation continues until the end of the Christmas celebrations. Presently, the situation in Sarawak remains controlled and safe,” he said.
During the meet-and-greet, Saifullizan and other police personnel also handed over helmets and goodies to motorcyclists; attached safety stickers on e-hailing motorcycles and motorcycles belonging to Farley Kuching employees; and conducted a walkabout in front of the mall’s main entrance.
