KUCHING (Sept 25): Sarawak aims to leverage the vast market potential in China to sell its products, particularly food items, in order to achieve the goal of becoming a net exporter of food by 2030, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Abang Johari highlighted that the cordial relationship between China and Malaysia has enabled Sarawak to benefit from China’s economic prosperity.
“With a population of over 1 billion, China is, of course, an enormous market for products from Sarawak,” he said in his speech at the 75th anniversary reception of the founding of the People’s Republic of China at a local hotel here yesterday.
His speech was read by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who represented him at the event.
Abang Johari emphasised Sarawak’s commitment to enhancing trade ties and collaboration with China.
He acknowledged the significant Chinese investments in Sarawak, especially in the manufacturing sector, and the presence of Chinese entrepreneurs exploring opportunities in the green energy sector.
He also expressed gratitude for the support from the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Kuching, which has been instrumental in fostering closer ties between the people of Sarawak and China.
Looking ahead, Abang Johari called for increased cultural and people-to-people exchanges, trade, and tourism from China to further strengthen the relationship between Sarawak and China.
