KUCHING (April 8): The Sarawak government, through the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, has disbursed grants totaling more than RM1.93 million this year to 43 youth and sports associations and organisations in the state, said Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
He said the grants serve as a catalyst for associations to remain active and committed in carrying out their programmes and activities.
“This grant is not merely financial assistance, but a symbol of the government’s trust and strong support for youths and the sports community to strengthen the administration of youth and sports associations in Sarawak, while at the same time creating programmes that are inclusive, progressive, and impactful to society.
“We hope every association will be more proactive and take the initiative to seek additional resources, and not rely solely on grants channelled by the ministry,” he said during the 2026 Youth and Sports Grant Presentation Ceremony here.
Abdul Karim explained that the grant functions similarly to the Minor Rural Project (MRP) allocation, which is distributed to associations, places of worship, and non-governmental organisations within a given area.
He also expressed concern over the activity level of certain associations, describing some as existing only on paper without real grassroots engagement.
“I do not want to see associations that are driven by only two or three individuals, despite having a complete committee.
“There are also some that we ourselves are unsure whether they still exist or not,” he said.
He stressed that reports on fund usage must be transparent and reflect actual activities, rather than just documentation that looks good on paper.
Commenting on sports development, Abdul Karim said associations entrusted with responsibilities must be accountable in developing their respective sports, including producing high-performing athletes.
He said there are still associations that have failed to show achievements despite being given responsibilities for years, whether at the local or regional level.
“This is very disappointing because we want Sarawak to become a sporting powerhouse,” he said.
He also highlighted Sarawak’s performance in the Malaysia Games (Sukma), noting the state has only won the overall championship when hosting the event.
He urged associations receiving grants to demonstrate commitment for better future achievements.
Abdul Karim added that Sarawak athletes are increasingly capable of making a mark internationally.
“In track cycling, this development is very positive and this is what we want to see. As for wushu, it was once at a very high level.
“I hope that momentum can be maintained. Although its performance has declined slightly, we are confident that wushu can shine again,” he said.
Also present were State Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, the ministry’s permanent secretary Dzulkornain Masron and other officials.
