KUCHING (Feb 25): The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sarawak (ACCCIS) has expressed full support for the Sarawak government’s move to file a petition at the Federal Court seeking a judicial determination on the constitutional validity and continued applicability of federal petroleum laws in relation to Sarawak.

In a statement, ACCCIS said the action represents a proper constitutional process grounded in the Federal Constitution and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

“As the apex body representing the Chinese business community across Sarawak, ACCCIS views this constitutional reference as a legitimate and principled step grounded in the Federal Constitution and the MA63,” it said.

The chamber noted that the clarification sought would not only affirm constitutional positions but also strengthen legal certainty regarding Sarawak’s rights over its natural resources within its territorial boundaries.

“For the business community, regulatory clarity and constitutional certainty are essential foundations for long-term investment, economic planning and sustainable development,” it added.

ACCCIS said a definitive ruling from the apex court would provide greater assurance to investors and industry stakeholders in both upstream and downstream oil and gas activities, while reinforcing confidence in the rule of law.

The chamber also acknowledged the state government’s continued commitment to constructive engagement with the federal government in seeking an amicable and mutually beneficial resolution.

“Such an approach reflects responsibility, institutional maturity and respect for constitutional processes,” it said.

Reaffirming its stance, ACCCIS said it stands firmly behind the Sarawak government in its efforts to safeguard Sarawak’s legitimate rights and interests for the long-term prosperity of the state and the federation.
