BINTULU (Aug 21): The Sarawak muaythai team’s success at the 21st Malaysia Games (Sukma XXI) was not by chance, but the result of tireless effort and dedication, said its assistant chef de mission (ACDM) Johnny Pang Leong Ming.

In stating this, he expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance at Sukma XXI, which exceeded expectations after winning a total of five gold, four silver and one bronze medals in both the waikru and combat events, surpassing the initial two-gold target.

“I hope the Sarawak athletes continue to work hard and aim for more victories in major international competitions, further enhancing the region’s reputation in muaythai,” said the Tanjong Batu assemblyman.

Speaking to the media after the final combat event on Tuesday, Pang noted that serving as ACDM of the Sarawak muaythai delegation was not an easy task.

He extended his heartfelt gratitude to all parties involved during his tenure, including the Sukma organising committee, the Resident and District officers, the muaythai association, the referee team from Thailand, Naim Group and Bintulu Paragon managements, Bintulu Development Authority and the police for their collective efforts in making this event a success.

“This competition is one of the key events that garnered the attention of the whole Sarawak community, and it is one that has numerous awards, with four gold medals on offer in the waikru and mai muay events along with 14 gold medals in the combat event.

“The hard work and dedication of the athletes throughout the competition provided everyone the opportunity to witness such an intense and thrilling event,” he added.

Moreover, Pang expressed his hope that the athletes would leave Sarawak with fond and lasting memories from the event and encouraged them to continue visiting Sarawak not just for competitions, but also to experience the peace and harmony in the region.
