KUCHING, April 6: Adam Yii Siew Sang has officially had his tenure as Mayor of Miri City extended, now set to continue until 2027.

“My aim is to further strengthen Miri’s position as a liveable, resilient, and progressive city in line with our vision to make Miri a Green, Smart, and Internationally Liveable Resort City,” he was quoted by TVS as saying.

Yii reiterated his commitment to enhancing public service delivery, improving infrastructure, advancing digital transformation, and promoting environmental sustainability.

He expressed confidence in leading Miri towards continued progress through consistent development policies focused on the well-being of its residents.

The oath-taking ceremony was officiated by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, signalling continued State support for Miri’s development initiatives.

Yii has served as Miri’s Mayor for nearly a decade since 2016 and has also been the State assemblyman for Pujut since 2021.

Following the ceremony, Dr Sim took to Facebook to highlight the importance of local councils in Sarawak.

“Local councils are the frontline of Sarawak government services. The public knows how to contact councils for issues such as potholes, cutting grass, streetlights, and water pipe leaks, even if some of these belong to other agencies,” he wrote.

Dr Sim also highlighted the financial challenges faced by local councils, noting that only half of Sarawak’s 27 councils operate with a surplus, as many have not seen assessment increases since the 1970s. Despite this, Sarawak continues to have the lowest council assessment rates in Malaysia.

He further shared an overview of Sarawak’s local government structure. Currently, there are three city councils in the State — Miri City Council (MCC), Kuching North City Commission (DBKU), and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) — alongside three municipal councils (MPP, MPKS, SMC) and the rest being district councils. Across Malaysia, there are 20 city councils, 16 in Peninsular Malaysia and four in East Malaysia.

He congratulated the newly reappointed council leaders for the one-year term from April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027. Adam Yii has been reappointed as Mayor of Miri City Council, Cr Dato’ Peter Minos will continue as chairman of Serian District Council, Cr Sempurai Petrus Ngelai as chairman of Sibu Rural District Council, Cr Edward Mendai as chairman of Marudi District Council, and Cr Sufian Mohat as chairman of Limbang District Council. — DayakDaily
