KUCHING (March 31): A 66-year-old small-scale farmer living in Borneo Heights here is struggling to make ends meet amidst ongoing global economic challenges.

Patim Abeh, who grows banana trees and collects wild vegetables, earns between RM150 and RM200 a month.

According Hope Place Kuching, which recently visited the family, Patim lives with his wife, Kueh, 75, and sister-in-law, Sikan, 61, and receives minimal financial support.

Patim begins his day as early as 6.30am, travelling on foot for two hours to reach his farm.

He works until noon before making the two-hour journey back home.
“He does all that is needed at the farm and usually returns home around midday,” the non-governmental organisation (NGO) said in a statement on Monday.

Kueh, who previously assisted him, is no longer able to work due to mobility issues and high blood pressure.

Sikan now shoulders most of the household responsibilities.

The condition of Patim’s house in Borneo Heights, Kuching.

Patim’s son, who lives some distance away, visits on weekends and provides limited financial aid.

The family resides in a poorly constructed single-storey cement house, with some wall only waist-high and others patched with plywood.

The bathroom lacks a door, the roof leaks, and the house has no proper ceiling plastering, although it has access to electricity and water supply.

Hope Place is currently providing continuous food supply to the family.

It also appeals for public donations to support families in need.

Donations can be deposited directly to its Maybank account 511289001160, or via the S Pay Global QR code on its Facebook page.
