KUCHING, Jan 19: Sarawak’s state-owned airline AirBorneo has been likened to government-backed carriers such as Emirates and Qatar Airways, with its role seen as strategic infrastructure rather than a purely profit-driven enterprise, said Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Speaking at a press conference following a courtesy visit by AirBorneo’s management at Bangunan Baitulmakmur II here today, Abdul Karim said a government-supported airline could go far with the right management, particularly in strengthening connectivity and driving broader economic growth.

“AirBorneo’s development will be phased, with the airline currently focused on continuing Rural Air Services (RAS) previously operated by MASwings, which remain subsidised by the federal government.

“More visible progress is expected from July onwards, with the airline anticipated to establish itself over the next two years before expanding regionally and, eventually, globally,” he said.

Abdul Karim said regional expansion within Southeast Asia could begin as early as 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and aircraft availability, with potential destinations including Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines.

“Beyond the region, Sarawak aspires to see AirBorneo fly to Jeju, South Korea, a destination previously mentioned by the Premier, while maintaining its Southeast Asian routes,” he added.

He said plans presented to the ministry outlined the airline’s roadmap on a quarterly basis through to 2030, although many operational details could not yet be disclosed publicly as they were still being finalised and required board approval.

Meanwhile, AirBorneo chief executive officer (CEO) Megat Ardian Wira Mohd Aminuddin said the management is currently focused on network planning and will be discussing fleet requirements with the board, stressing that aircraft acquisition must align with viable destinations. — DayakDaily
