MIRI, June 4: All longhouses in the Marudi constituency are expected to receive continuous 24-hour electricity supply by the end of this year, marking a major milestone in rural electrification efforts in the area.

Sarawak Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government as well as Marudi assemblyman Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil said only 16 longhouses in the constituency are still not connected to the main electricity grid and currently rely on diesel generators.

He said eight of the longhouses are located in Bukit Limau and Sungai Lamah, while the remaining eight are in Sungai Peking.

“I was informed by Sarawak Energy Berhad that the connection works for all 16 longhouses are expected to be completed by the end of this year.

“Once completed, all longhouses in the Marudi constituency will enjoy 24-hour electricity supply,” he was quoted as saying by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) on Wednesday (June 3).

Dr Penguang added that the delay in connecting electricity supply to the affected longhouses was due to works required to link the main grid to the remote settlements.

He also noted that four longhouses in Long Teran had already been connected to electricity supply ahead of the Gawai Dayak celebration, while Rumah Kara in Sungai Nat was recently connected.

On development progress in Marudi, he said several key infrastructure projects were moving ahead steadily.

“The construction of the R5-standard road from Marudi to Miri is progressing ahead of schedule,” he said.

He further said that upgrading works on the Lapok–Simpang Long Jegan road and the Long Lama–Ulu Baram route to Public Works Department Sarawak R1 standard are also actively ongoing and expected to be completed by mid-2028.

Other ongoing developments include a new waterfront project by Drainage and Irrigation Department Sarawak and the Marudi District Council, road upgrades to Tinjar Hilir, rural water supply projects by Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) Sarawak, construction of a community hall in Lapok, a multipurpose tamu in Beluru, and a new Beluru District Office.

He said the continuous implementation of these projects reflects the Sarawak government’s commitment to strengthening rural development and improving the well-being of people in Marudi and surrounding areas. — DayakDaily
