KUCHING, May 17: Kapit MP Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi has warned all parties—whether political leaders, community leaders, or civil servants—against being complacent, or ‘anang rindang’.

Nanta, who is also the Works Minister, urged all parties to continue working as one team to ensure that the development and needs of the people receive the best possible attention.

Speaking at the Mantar Gawai Dinner Ceremony at Balai Raya Song in Kapit on Saturday (May 16), he also said he witnessed a strong spirit of unity among the community during the celebration.

“Gawai has always been an occasion for us to gather, strengthen relationships, and reinforce the spirit of togetherness,” he said on Facebook.

Citing the Iban community, he said that the practice of wearing traditional attire, especially during the Gawai festive season, remains one of the traditions that has stayed firmly intact to this day.

He also said that the traditional Kumang beauty pageants, which are often held during Gawai Dayak, serve as a platform to showcase traditional clothing, introduce customs and traditions, and elevate their ancestral heritage.

“I emphasised the positive development of these two traditions, which are increasingly gaining popularity among the younger generation. They are not only proud to wear Iban attire and uphold Iban traditions, but are also contributing to economic spillover effects, with more handicraft artisans turning this into a source of income.

“This is the kind of small-scale industry that we should encourage because it helps strengthen the community’s economy while also preserving our inherited heritage,” he said.

Meanwhile, he also presented contributions amounting to RM55,000 to the Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) Katibas Branch and the Sejahtera Jaya Song Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK). — DayakDaily
