KUCHING, Mar 23: The communities of Apau Koyan have thrown their full support behind the proposed upgrade of Sungai Asap into a full district, saying the move comes after nearly three decades of underdevelopment that has left infrastructure and public services struggling to keep pace with population growth.

According to a press release, chairman of the Balui Lake Native Association (BLNA) Pemanca Tony Kulleh described Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s announcement as a timely Hari Raya Aidilfitri gift for the people of the Murum constituency.

“Upgrading Sungai Asap to a full district will significantly enhance administrative services and strengthen government capacity to deliver development initiatives, ultimately improving the socio-economic well-being of our community,” he said.

Deputy chairman of BLNA Pemanca Umek Jeno added that nearly 30 years after the resettlement under the Bakun Resettlement Scheme (BRS), the population and economic activity in the area have grown substantially, yet existing public infrastructure remains inadequate.

“We fully support the Premier’s announcement. After decades of limited development, this is a necessary step forward for our community,” he said.

Residents on the ground echoed these views, stressing that the upgrade is not only about recognition, but also about timely and meaningful action.

The Bakun Resettlement Scheme (BRS) was established in the late 1990s to resettle communities affected by the Bakun Hydroelectric Project. Home to the Kenyah, Kayan, Ukit and Penan, the area has seen significant population growth and economic activity, but infrastructure and public services have lagged behind. Elevating Sungai Asap to Apau Koyan District is seen as a strategic step to strengthen governance, improve service delivery, and support inclusive development.

Community leaders also expressed appreciation to Deputy Minister for Utilities and Telecommunications and Belaga assemblyman Datuk Liwan Lagang, as well as Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon, for advocating the proposal.

Looking ahead, the community hopes the upgrade will translate into tangible improvements, including better facilities, enhanced services, and more opportunities for the next generation. — DayakDaily
