KUCHING, May 19: The upcoming Asia-Pacific Green Hydrogen Conference 2026, set to take place at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching from June 9 to 11, will feature engaging dialogue sessions aimed at advancing green hydrogen development, sustainable energy solutions, and long-term economic resilience and prosperity.

Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said the future of energy must be built on systems that are integrated, adaptable, and capable of delivering meaningful impact beyond policy discussions.

“We are honoured that the upcoming conference will feature distinguished global and regional voices. Their participation reflects the growing importance of international collaboration in shaping the hydrogen economy, as well as the recognition that energy transition is a shared global responsibility requiring collective action and shared expertise,” he said during a press conference held on the sidelines of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) media room today.

Carrying the theme “Empowering the Future, Delivering the Resilient Hydrogen Ecosystem”, the conference has so far confirmed 28 speakers, with additional confirmations expected in the coming days.

Dr Hazland noted that the world is currently undergoing a major transformation in the global energy landscape, driven by geopolitical uncertainties, climate change, technological advancements, and increasing demands for energy security.

“Green hydrogen has emerged as one of the most promising solutions for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy industry, transportation, and power generation.

“However, it is important to emphasise that hydrogen is not a stand-alone solution. It must be developed as part of a complete and resilient ecosystem that integrates production, infrastructure, regulation, and end-use applications coherently and sustainably,” he said.

He added that Sarawak is firmly committed to playing an active role in the global energy transition, leveraging its strategic position within ASEAN, strong policy direction, and abundant renewable hydropower resources. Guided by the visionary leadership of Premier Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Dr Hazland said the State is well-positioned to develop a competitive green hydrogen economy.

He said Sarawak is actively advancing initiatives in hydrogen production, mobility applications, infrastructure development, and strategic partnerships that will form the backbone of a long-term hydrogen ecosystem.

At the same time, he emphasised that no country or region can develop a hydrogen economy in isolation, making regional and international collaboration essential.

“The Asia-Pacific region has the potential to become a global hub for hydrogen production and trade. However, this will require strong cooperation in areas such as regulatory harmonisation, technology development, investment facilitation, and safety standards.

“A resilient hydrogen ecosystem is one that is built on trust and shared progress across borders,” he added.

Among the highlights of the programme are a keynote address on the shift towards renewable energy as a catalyst for sustainable prosperity, which will provide global perspectives on how energy transition can drive inclusive growth and long-term sustainability.

In addition, Plenary Session 1 titled “Progressing in Technology and Regulation” will focus on policy frameworks, technological readiness, and the scaling of hydrogen solutions in real-world applications, alongside a fireside chat session.

Dr Hazland also welcomed the participation of government agencies, industry players, academic institutions, non-government organisations (NGOs), sponsors, investors, and stakeholders from across the region and beyond.

He reaffirmed that Sarawak remains open and committed to working with global partners who share the State’s vision of a sustainable and resilient energy future. — DayakDaily
