KUCHING (Feb 20): Authorities are exploring suitable nearby areas to serve as additional parking facilities following limited parking space at the Semarak Ramadan Bazaar, said Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman.

Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier said the increase in the number of stalls and visitors this year has inevitably led to parking constraints, particularly as some existing parking areas are now used for stall placement.

“Discussions have been held with Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) to identify suitable nearby sites that can be used as additional parking for the comfort of both visitors and regular patrons of surrounding premises,” he said.

The Tupong assemblyman added that not all visitors come solely for the bazaar, so a balance must be struck to accommodate all parties.

“Several nearby areas are currently being evaluated for this purpose,” he told reporters when met after opening the bazaar here.

He also highlighted changes in this year’s bazaar layout, including upgraded stall concepts replacing the large canopies used previously.

“Traders who previously operated near the front area of Masjid At-Taqwa, Kampung Pinang Jawa, have been relocated to a new site that is more structured and sturdier.

“The upgrading efforts by DBKU will not only present a neater and more modern image, but also create opportunities for more traders to participate in the bazaar,” said Fazzrudin.

This year, the bazaar features more than 30 permanent traders alongside an additional 10 temporary traders. The encouraging response is expected to drive continued growth in visitor numbers.

Fazzrudin noted that the area has so far remained unaffected by floods or flash floods, giving traders confidence to operate throughout Ramadan without disruption from extreme weather.

The bazaar’s organisation also emphasises the implementation of 3R (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) practices, aligning with the state’s sustainability goals.

The initiative aims to reduce single-use plastics while encouraging environmentally friendly habits among traders and visitors.

Also present at the opening were DBKU mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman and other distinguished guests.
