KUCHING (March 4): Efforts to enhance the festive atmosphere across northern Kuching in conjunction with Ramadan and Aidilfitri could be undermined if acts of vandalism persist, said Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi.

The Deputy Minister in Sarawak Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU and Islamic Affairs) expressed concern over several recent incidents, including damage to an electricity substation that powers decorative lights near a pedestrian overpass at Taman Hussein in Petra Jaya.

“We have beautified the city, but these efforts cannot be fully realised if incidents like this continue,” he told reporters after the Agihan Mushaf Wakaf Bahagian Kuching programme here.

Dr Abdul Rahman said vandalism results not only in financial losses but also disrupts preparations aimed at creating a vibrant and welcoming environment for residents and visitors during the festive season.

“I hope we will receive cooperation from all parties and individuals.

“Acts of vandalism cause losses to everyone and undermine our efforts to beautify the city,” he said, urging the public to report any incidents to the authorities.

“It is our shared responsibility.

“Even minor incidents should be reported to local authorities or the police to reduce vandalism in our city,” he added.

Despite these challenges, DBKU will continue its annual initiative to enhance festive cheer across its administrative areas.

“For areas under DBKU’s administration, we have consistently worked year after year to raise the level of festivity, particularly during Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri,” he said, highlighting that the city centre, especially Jalan Satok, will be a focal point for decorations.

Within the next two days, DBKU will launch its Aidilfitri bazaar at Jalan Satok, accompanied by large-scale installation of decorative lights.

Similar installations will also be carried out at the Kuching Bridge on the same day.

Other locations earmarked for enhanced lighting and beautification include Tebingan Sungai Kuching, Darul Hana Bridge, the vicinity of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly building, and Pangkalan Sapi.
