KUCHING (Jan 20): Sarawak is well positioned to emerge as a new semiconductor industry hub for Malaysia, supported by its strategic location, reliable green energy supply and a business-friendly investment environment, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

He said the state’s strategic geographical position makes it an attractive destination for global semiconductor players.

“Sarawak is well positioned for the development of the semiconductor industry.

“In terms of location, Sarawak is strategically located in the heart of Asia, which places it within close proximity to major economies such as China, India and Australia.

“Secondly, Sarawak has an abundant energy supply, particularly renewable energy,” he said, according to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).

He said this during a doorstop interview after chairing a meeting with the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association (MSIA) here on Monday. Also present was MSIA president Datuk Seri Wong Siew Hai.

Awang Tengah, who is International Trade, Industry and Investment Minister, pointed out that semiconductor and high-technology industries require efficient and stable energy.

“Sarawak’s green energy capability not only supports industrial operations but also enhances the value of products produced, which is increasingly important for international recognition,” he said.

He added that the Sarawak government is placing strong emphasis on talent development to ensure long-term sustainability of the industry.

Technological development, he explained, has been made a key focus at the pre-tertiary education level this year to build a future-ready, highly skilled workforce.

In addition, he said improvements to sea and air connectivity in industrial areas have been identified as among the key requirements to support the overall growth of the semiconductor ecosystem in Sarawak.

He also stressed the importance of strengthening international partnerships, including with the United States, China, Taiwan and Singapore, to ensure Sarawak and Malaysia remain competitive and relevant in the global semiconductor supply chain.
