KUALA LUMPUR:

The sessions court here has sentenced two babysitters to a year each in prison for abusing two babies at a nursery last December.

Judge Noridah Adam handed down the sentence to Sarawakian Perada Randai and Indonesian Yella Prissillia after they pleaded guilty to charges under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act.

Perada was charged with slapping the cheeks and hitting the head of a nine-month-old baby girl while Yella was charged with pinching a baby boy’s feet, covering his face with a pillow, and force-feeding him milk.

The offences took place at a nursery in Cheras on Dec 15, 2025.

According to the facts of the case, the boy’s mother, Nur Fathin Liyana Zulkifli, discovered bruises on his body.

After checking the nursery’s CCTV, she found that her son and other babies had been abused.

Before being sentenced, both women pleaded with the court for a minimum sentence. Deputy public prosecutor Adiba Iman Hassan, however, called for a custodial sentence since both victims were infants.

Fathin was present in court to read out a victim impact statement for her son, telling the court she was heartbroken when she first watched the CCTV recording.

“How can a woman (Yella), who is also a mother like me, do this to a child?” she said, adding that her son became fearful of people after the incident.

Lawyer Jason Wee held a watching brief for Fathin.
