KUCHING, Mar 16: The Batang Igan Bridge, Sarawak’s ninth completed bridge, was officially opened today, reducing travel time that previously took around 30 minutes by ferry to just a few minutes by road.

According to a Facebook post by the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak, the bridge is part of the Sarawak Coastal Road Project Package D5, implemented by the department under the Ministry of Infrastructure and Ports Development Sarawak, and was pre-officiated today in a ceremony by Deputy Premier and Minister of Infrastructure and Ports Development Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

The 1,439.40-metre two-lane Batang Igan bridge includes two-lane approach roads on both sides and upgraded sections of the existing route to make travel safer and more comfortable for road users.

With its completion, the Batang Igan Bridge joins other major bridges in Sarawak including Marudi, Muara Lassa, Tun Taib Mahmud (Jepak), Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang Tuanku Haji Othman (Batang Rajang), Batang Saribas, Datuk Amar Juma’ani (Bintangor), Sebauh and Lingga.

The bridge provides faster and safer access for residents and travellers, marking a significant step in the State’s efforts to strengthen its infrastructure network and demonstrating the government’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and delivering tangible benefits through the Sarawak Coastal Road Project. — DayakDaily
