KUCHING, May 21: The completion of the Batang Lupar 1 Bridge has been hailed as a historic achievement for Sarawak, marking a major milestone in the State’s infrastructure development and regional connectivity.
Spanning 4.8 kilometres across the Batang Lupar River, the bridge is now recognised as the longest river bridge in Sarawak and Malaysia, surpassing the 1.7-kilometre Sungai Johor Bridge, which previously held the record.
Economic analyst Dato Peter Minos described the project as a source of pride and joy for Sarawakians, noting that the bridge represents more than just a physical structure.
“This is history. Not just an ordinary reporting of a physical achievement and progress,” he said in a statement.
Minos recalled the excitement among residents of Bau and Lundu districts years ago when the Batu Kitang Bridge was opened, physically linking the districts to Kuching for the first time. Although much shorter in length, the bridge was celebrated as an important development for the people then.
He said the Batang Lupar 1 Bridge now carries even greater significance due to its scale and economic potential.
“The Batang Lupar 1 Bridge can be said as an economic development catalyst. It connects regions, it connects people. It reduces distances. It will definitely usher in economic progress and development, given time and the will of the people and Sarawak government,” he said.
The bridge also eliminates reliance on ferry services, long considered inconvenient for motorists and residents travelling along the coastal route.
“Like the many bridges along the Coastal Highway, the Batang Lupar 1 Bridge makes people happy because they no longer have to depend on cumbersome ferry crossings and in time, it builds opportunities of all sorts,” he said.
Minos also expressed appreciation to the Sarawak Government and the State leadership for planning and completing the project.
“Good things cannot be taken for granted. Good things do not come on their own,” he said, while congratulating those involved in funding and delivering the project.
