KUCHING, March 11: The management of temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in Batu Kawa has received praise for ensuring flood victims are well-cared for, with operations running efficiently and essential supplies adequately provided.
Deputy Premier and Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, visited two PPS at Dewan R-Piang in Kampung Sinar Budi and Dewan Stapok, which together sheltered 90 families, comprising 340 victims from the area.
“I am satisfied with the management here today. Everything is arranged smoothly, and the necessary supplies are adequately provided,” he told the media after the visits, as reported by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).
He noted that both centres were well-organised, with all basic needs of the victims fully met. He also lauded the strong cooperation between rescue agencies and the local community, which contributed to a seamless evacuation.
Despite the presence of elderly individuals and persons with disabilities (OKU) among those affected, relocation efforts proceeded without any complications.
“This demonstrates the spirit of cooperation we encourage during disasters like floods. The victims followed instructions well, making the process smoother,” he said.
The evacuation, which began at 1am, benefited from improved disaster management standard operating procedures (SOPs). The operation involved district and resident officers alongside multiple agencies, including the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), and other relevant bodies.
“All agencies performed their roles effectively to ensure the victims’ safety. We are grateful that no incidents occurred,” he added.
Both PPS closed at 12pm today, with all flood victims returning safely to their homes. — DayakDaily
