‘Be A Star’ K-Pop dance competition ends on high note, showcasing talent from Sarawak and beyond

KUCHING (Dec 27): The ‘Be A Star’ K-Pop Dance Concert & Competition 2025 concluded on a high note, bringing together young performers from across Sarawak and beyond.

Organised by the Damai Chapter of Junior Chamber International (JCI) in collaboration with Star Studio, the large-scale youth arts event aimed to nurture creativity, promote cultural exchange and empower young talents through dance.

“This is not merely a competition, but also a meaningful platform that connects young people through shared passion, perseverance, and aspiration,” said JCI Damai president Sean Wong in a statement.

He said the recent event had exceeded expectations, having gathered not only participants from various regions of Sarawak, but also those from overseas.

Meanwhile, Star Studio representative Kelby Then expressed pride in having the opportunity to collaborate on the event and also in experiencing the excitement in discovering emerging dance talents.

“Star Studio is committed to supporting the growth of the local and regional dance community.”

The competition featured two categories: open, and solo.

In the Open challenge, LEIA from Kuching emerged champion, with 8dios from Sibu as first runners-up, and District Gang from Indonesia placing third and also winning the ‘Best Costume Award’.

The ‘Popular Award’ went to Obsidian, a dance team from Miri.

The Solo winner was Voon Woo Wee, with Barry Ting Hung Sheng (Fubuki) and Jeff Juliano Mok Khin Chiat as the respective runners-up.

The ‘Best Costume Award’ in this category was given to Tiong Xiao Qian.

Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang, who attended the event, commended the organisers for providing a positive platform that could foster self-confidence, teamwork and healthy artistic expression among the talented youths.
