MIRI (March 16): Local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) should always help their elderly members in accessing government assistance schemes such as the Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance (SKAS).
According to Chia Kah Furng – a special aide to Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting – in view of their key role of serving as a bridge between the community and the government, they have the most viable position of conveying to their members vital information from and policies made by the government.
“Some elderly individuals who qualify for government aid may face difficulties in accessing information or completing digital applications.
“In this regard, the NGOs can step in to help, such as assisting the senior citizens check their eligibility, provide guidance in navigating mobile applications or online systems required to obtain the assistance.
“The NGOs are not only a platform for social interactions, but also one where members can support and learn from one another,” he said in his speech for Miri Che Lee Khor Moral Uplifting Society’s Chinese New Year gathering at a hotel here on Saturday.
In addition, Chia called upon parents to pay close attention to their children’s usage of digital devices.
“In today’s era, children can have access to information at an extremely fast pace.
“With just a mobile phone, they may know many things even before the adults.
“That is why parents and society must guide them from a young age to develop the right values and responsible behaviour,” he pointed out.
At the event, the organiser hosted 60 senior citizens, including 20 from Miri Home for the Aged who were specially invited to the gathering.
Meanwhile, Miri Che Lee Khor’s chairman Tony Pui invited more youngsters to take part in activities carried out by the organisation.
“We welcome youths who are interested in contributing to society through volunteer work and public welfare initiatives.
“At the same time, we also welcome senior citizens to join us. Through participating in our activities, they can enrich their retirement life while continuing to contribute to society,” he said.
