KUCHING (Sept 13): A bill to address the emerging challenges and phenomena associated with social media will be tabled at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting this November, said DUN Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar.
He said that a recent meeting of Speakers from across Malaysia has led to a decision to amend the standing orders.
“The meeting of Speakers from Malaysia has decided to amend the standing orders to address new challenges and phenomena.
“The state government has agreed to propose a bill for presentation at the upcoming DUN sitting,” he said.
Asfia was speaking at a press conference after the opening of the 2024 Conference of Parliamentary and State Assembly Speakers of Malaysia at the DUN Complex here today.
He was responding to questions from reporters regarding the proposed changes to the standing orders related to social media in the Sarawak DUN.
Also present at the press conference was Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.
Johari thanked the Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg for officiating the conference and described the event as a significant step forward.
“The Premier’s presence was the icing on the cake, solidifying our efforts as we have also approved several resolutions at the conference,” he said.
Johari outlined that nine resolutions were agreed upon, which will be brought back to each state legislature and government for consideration.
“We request that the federal and state governments respond, even if not all resolutions can be addressed immediately.
“The resolutions aim to empower the institution of Speakers, which is central to the functioning of both state and federal assemblies,” he added.
