BINTULU (Dec 6): The Bintulu Regatta could possibly grow into one of Sarawak’s most distinctive tourism attractions that is capable of drawing thousands of visitors if strengthened and promoted strategically, said Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

The Bintulu MP commended the organisers for successfully reviving the regatta after a 13-year hiatus.

“The Bintulu Regatta is a symbol of heritage, courage, and maritime identity of Bintulu’s diverse communities. It is a tradition inherited through generations, and reflects the strength, skill, and unity of the local maritime community.

“This is where people of different races and backgrounds come together in a celebration that strengthens harmony and understanding,” he said in a speech read by Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture secretary-general Datuk Shaharuddin Abu Sohot during the opening ceremony.

Also present were Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang, Bintulu district officer Awang Mohammed Nizam Awang Ali Bohan, Bintulu Deputy Resident Abang Zainuddin Abang Turkey, and Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad Group Stakeholder Relations general manager Maslihah Tioh.

Tiong said each participating boat carries its own history and uniqueness which makes the event unlike modern sporting competitions, and with structured planning and promotion, the regatta could stand alongside major water events in Malaysia.

“With its potential to boost hotels, restaurants, transportation, small traders and tourism operators, the Bintulu Regatta can become an identity and brand for Bintulu.

“Especially since the programme is enriched by cultural performances, traditional food, community exhibitions, and local product showcases that can attract a large number of visitors and stimulate the local economy,” he said.

“We want the Bintulu Regatta to not only be an annual local celebration, but also a tourism magnet that brings Sarawak to the global stage.”

He added that the ministry had allocated a special grant to assist in the organisation of this year’s regatta.
