KUCHING, June 6: Sarawak plans to manufacture specialised energy generation cells in Bintulu through a collaboration with South Korea as part of efforts to develop technologies that convert sunlight into electricity and reduce reliance on conventional energy sources.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the initiative is linked to ongoing global research into new methods of generating electricity using sunlight, with scientists exploring alternatives to conventional battery-based energy storage systems.
He explained that the technology involves specialised cells capable of harnessing light to produce electrons which can then be converted into electrical energy.
As Sarawak positions itself to participate in the emerging sector, Abang Johari stressed the importance of developing a skilled workforce to support the industry’s growth.
“That is why we need to prepare our skilled workforce for this technology. God willing, Sarawak will produce cells that can split light to generate energy, with production planned in Bintulu,” he said when launching the Sarawak Career and Training (SCaT) Fair 2026 here today.
Abang Johari said the collaboration with South Korea would also facilitate the transfer of knowledge and expertise in semiconductor wafer technology which plays a key role in converting light into electricity.
He added that the initiative forms part of Sarawak’s broader strategy to diversify its energy sources while gradually reducing dependence on fossil fuels in the long term. — DayakDaily
