KUCHING, April 2: The inaugural Borneo 100 Triathlon 2026 will take place in Sematan on June 21, set to be the largest triathlon ever held in Sarawak.

Organised by Kelab Triatlon Kuching Selatan and Grit Event Management, the race is sanctioned by the Malaysia Triathlon Association, with timing handled by official SEA Games timers to ensure accuracy and competitive standards.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the event is a major step in positioning Sarawak as a hub for international-standard endurance sports.

“The event has already attracted participants not only from Sarawak and across Malaysia, but also from Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, Germany, the Philippines, China, Russia and Italy.

“With a target of at least 20 per cent international participation, Borneo 100 has strong potential to grow into a recognised international triathlon brand,” he said at a press conference at Baitul Makmur 2 today.

Abdul Karim added that more than 60 per cent of event-related spending is expected to benefit local businesses in Sematan, including homestays, food vendors, and transport providers.

The Borneo 100 course at Sematan Palm Beach Resort will feature a 1.5km open sea swim, an 80km coastal bike ride, and an 18.5km run along the Pan Borneo Highway — a full endurance challenge at the “edge of Borneo.”

Other categories include:

    • Standard Aquathlon Individual: 1.5km swim, 10km run
    • Sprint Individual: 750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run
    • Olympic Distance Individual: 1.5km swim, 40km bike, 10km run
    • Olympic Distance Relay: Teams of three, with each member completing the full 1.5km swim, 40km bike, and 10km run
