KUCHING (Sept 2): The Oriental Dance Arts Association of Kuching (ODAAK) has confirmed that over 100 participants from across Malaysia will compete in the 2024 Borneo Idol Dance Arts Competition grand finals, this Sept 21.
The association’s founder and president Jasmine Tan said the participants, aged between seven and 65, would represent various regions of the country.
“We conducted auditions in Bintulu and Sabah, with the Kuching regional audition set for this Sept 21 at Dewan Setia Raja in Kuching,” she said during a press conference at a hotel here yesterday.
The 2024 Borneo Idol Dance Arts Competition is co-organised by Just Dance Studio Bintulu and The S Belly Dance Troupe + Intellart Tuition and Talents Centre Kota Kinabalu.
Adding on, Tan highlighted the importance of recognising dance as an art form, both at local and international levels, and also encouraging more young people to develop a passion for dancing.
The competition features two categories: Solo (Junior Aged 12 and Below, and Adults Aged 13 and Above) and Group, with the participants competing in the K-Pop Dance, Choreographed Dance, and Oriental Dance sub-categories.
Each grand winner of the Solo junior and adult categories will walk away with RM500, with the first and second runners-up will be presented with RM300 and RM200, respectively. The Top 3 performers will also receive trophies and certificates.
In the Group category, the grand final cash prize is RM800, with RM600 and RM500 for the respective second and third placers. The Top 3 groups will also be given medals, trophies and certificates.
There will also be Excellence Awards for both categories.
Adding on, Tan said the ODAAK had undergone a rigorous selection process to secure a grant from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak.
“The selection criteria for this grant include innovative practices, contributions to dance education, professionalism, ethical standards, community involvement, and a positive impact on the dance arts sector in Sarawak.”
“We are honoured to have received this grant from the ministry. We are committed to promoting dance culture and supporting the dance arts industry in Sarawak and Malaysia.
“This grant is a testament to our team’s dedication and the strategic event planning initiatives we have implemented this year,” she added.
Also present was ODAAK vice-president Michelle Yii.
