KUCHING, April 28: The distinct identity of the Sarawak Delta Geopark, described as the “Borneo’s Cradle of Origin”, was a key factor in Sarawak’s success in securing UNESCO Global Geopark recognition on the international stage.

In a TVS news, Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, said the recognition reflects the Sarawak government’s ongoing commitment to preserving its geological heritage, rich biodiversity, and the cultural legacy of its indigenous communities.

“It is a great honour for me to introduce the Sarawak Delta Geopark, a UNESCO Global Geopark with the tagline ‘Borneo’s Cradle of Origin’, a landscape that preserves Borneo’s oldest geological history, sustained through the living heritage of diverse indigenous communities rich in culture,” he said.

Len Talif, who also chairs the Sarawak Delta Global Geopark Steering Committee, delivered the remarks during the official introduction of the Sarawak Delta Geopark into the Global Geopark Network at a certificate presentation ceremony held at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on Monday (April 27).

The certificate was presented by Kristof Vandenberghe, Head of the Earth Sciences and Geoparks Section at UNESCO.

Len Talif also expressed Sarawak government’s appreciation to UNESCO and the International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme for the recognition.

With this achievement, Sarawak becomes the first Malaysian state represented in the network, bringing Malaysia’s total number of UNESCO Global Geoparks to four.

He added that as a new member of the network, Sarawak remains committed to strengthening international collaboration in safeguarding natural landscapes and cultural heritage for future generations. — DayakDaily
