KUCHING, May 15: Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) version of “check and balance” has unfortunately degenerated into a culture of constant negativity where they criticise almost every government initiative while contributing very little in terms of realistic policy alternatives or constructive solutions for Sarawak.
This is the view of Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap (GPS-SUPP) who pointed out that opposing for the sake of opposing is not democratic maturity. Constant political attacks without responsibility or solutions do not strengthen democracy, but only serve to create division, instability and public distrust.
Citing examples of attempted politicising on GPS government’s strengthening of transparency through Sarawak Ombudsman framework; Sarawak’s assertion on its constitutional rights; Sarawak’s implementation of major infrastructure and economic transformation projects, Yap claimed that DAP’s portrayals of these initiatives are often negative, designed to undermine public confidence.
“Sarawak does not need toxic politics imported from Malaya. Sarawak needs political stability, mature governance, constructive policies and long-term planning. The people want development, stability, economic growth and responsible leadership — not perpetual political drama disguised as ‘check and balance’,” said Yap at a press conference on the sidelines of Sarawak Legislative Assembly here today.
He held that DAP continues to misuse and misconstrue the meaning of “check and balance” as though “it merely means criticising, attacking, politicising and opposing everything done by the government regardless of merit or facts”.
“True check and balance is not about endless political rhetoric, sensational press statements or social media drama. True check and balance is about contributing constructively, strengthening institutions, ensuring transparency through law, and proposing practical solutions that benefit the rakyat.
“When we talk about check and balance, we need to do a check and balance on ourselves, right? If we want to make laws or rules, then we must impose the same rules on ourselves. You cannot tell people to do what is right, and you yourself do what is wrong,” said Yap.
He said over the years, DAP has repeatedly marketed itself as the so-called guardian of accountability, transparency and competency. However, when given opportunities at the Federal Government level, many of the reforms they loudly promised to Malaysians either failed to materialise, were diluted, or quietly abandoned altogether, citing among other, DAP’s multiple failures to realise its election promises including the return of 50 per cent Sarawak’s tax income, recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate and reformation of Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
“The rakyat can clearly see that despite all the slogans and political branding, there has been no significant structural transformation matching the scale of promises previously made by DAP leaders during election campaigns.
“Instead, Malaysians witnessed continued political appointments, unresolved governance controversies, selective political narratives, and internal contradictions within the very coalition that once claimed to champion ‘New Malaysia’, said Yap.
He said even today, DAP leaders continue preaching accountability and transparency to others while remaining largely silent on many issues involving their own federal allies.
“This selective outrage exposes the inconsistency between their rhetoric and actual political conduct,” said Yap. —DayakDaily
