KUCHING (Dec 6): A total of 119 pupils took part in the Kuching Chinese Primary Schools Chess Tournament held at the Ang Cheng Ho Multipurpose Hall.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Hui Hian, who officiated at the opening, was glad to note that 19 of the participants were Bumiputeras.

“Chinese chess is a game of strategy and involves the process of critical thinking. Individuals who are trained to play Chinese chess will be groomed to think critically and uphold the virtue of patience.

“These are among the characteristics of quality leaders that we need for nation-building,” he said.

Dr Sim added the Sarawak government places emphasis on human capital development to see further progress of the state.

One of the measures, he said, is providing free tertiary education for Sarawakians who pursue studies at local universities, irrespective of race and faith.
