MIRI (March 31): A fundraising campaign for two-hearing impaired children in need of cochlear implant surgery is struggling to reach its RM200,000 target.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts I Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew said the donation drive for five-year-old Flora Lee Kai Shuan and three-year-old Andy Harrison has only raised RM47,550 as of Monday.
“The fundraising target has yet to be achieved, and we hope the public will continue to extend their support so that these children can have a chance for the future,” said the Miri Cochlear Implant Society chairman.
“Although we have made some progress, there is still a considerate gap. We hope more people will come forward to help these children step out of a silent world.”
He explained that cochlear implant surgery is crucial for hearing-impaired children.
Early intervention offers a strong chance for them to gain hearing and integrate into normal learning and daily life, therefore delays in the surgery may have long-term impacts on their development.
He pointed out that no surgeries have been scheduled as arrangements can only be made once sufficient funds are secured.
Ting said the procedures may be carried out locally or at other suitable medical institutions.
He noted that both children come from families unable to afford the high medical costs, making public assistance even more vital.
“Every contribution brings hope and a chance for these children to hear,” he said.
Those wishing to contribute to the surgeries may channel their donations to Alliance Bank account: 110270010015028 (Sehati Service & Information Centre).
