MIRI (Feb 26): Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has praised the swift response of the community and private sector during last November’s devastating Kampung Wireless fire, calling it a shining example of collective resolve in containing fire outbreaks.

Speaking at the launch of Ops Siaga Raya and the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Fire Safety Campaign 2026 at Emart Riam here, Dr Sim paid tribute to members of the public and a local company whose quick actions helped contain the blaze that struck the riverfront village on Nov 15, 2025.

The fire gutted four houses and a furniture store at Kampung Wireless, while three nearby houses were partially damaged.

Bomba battled the blaze on land, with a private vessel from Seng Heng Shipping providing an additional water pump, and Sarawak Gas shutting down the main supply to the area as a safety measure.

Dr Sim lauded the residents and private sector for their rapid, selfless response, saying it helped prevent greater destruction and underscored the importance of collaboration between the community, private companies, and rescue agencies.

“Such synergy needs to continue to be strengthened to ensure the safety and well-being of the people are always protected,” he said.

The Kampung Wireless fire served as a sobering backdrop to the campaign, which Dr Sim said aims to ensure Bomba’s readiness remains at its peak ahead of the festive season — a period he noted carries heightened fire risks.

“The festive season often sees an increased risk of fire due to excessive use of electricity, installation of decorative lights, ongoing cooking activities, and high traffic movement,” he said, stressing that fire safety at home should never be underestimated.

He added that small acts of negligence can have devastating consequences, not just to property but to lives.

“Safety is not only the responsibility of the authorities but also a shared responsibility of the entire community.

“With awareness, vigilance, and responsibility, we can ensure that our celebrations are observed in a safe and harmonious environment,” he said.

Dr Sim also commended Bomba for going beyond emergency response to actively engage communities through safety inspections, monitoring, advocacy, and dissemination of fire safety information, describing fire and rescue personnel as strategic community partners rather than merely a rescue team.

He later presented certificates of appreciation to recipients of the Bomba Hero Awards for their acts in saving lives and properties in the Miri division.

Also present were State Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Deputy Miri City Mayor Ariffin Mohammad, Bomba Sarawak director Assistant Senior Commissioner Jamri Masran, and Miri Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah.
