MIRI (Oct 7): Scammers use artificial intelligence (AI) to personalise their scams to target people in vulnerable situation, hence the need to enhance knowledge on AI, said Dato’ Sri Lee Kim Shim.

The Transport Minister advised the public, especially the older generation to acquire knowledge and be more aware of the scammers’ methods in using today’s technology.

“There are cases where the women were deceived by their ‘online love’ and lost their money, all because of the ‘love’ created by AI,” he said in his speech when officiating the Kolej Komuniti Miri Open Day here yesterday.

The Senadin assemblyman, who is also the chairman of the college’s advisory committee, said Kolej Komuniti Miri is committed to provide life-long learning opportunities for all ages.

This initiative, through the Department of Polytechnic Education and Community College, and Education Ministry, aligns with the nation’s aspirations to build a knowledgeable and skilled society, he said.

“It is my hope as the chairman that the college management will focus more on organising technical courses that will greatly benefit youths and SPM graduates in the future,” he said.

Lee also suggested that the college set up a short course on information technology (IT) and AI for the general public, with a target focus to empower the women, single mothers, and the elder people.

With this lifelong learning and technology skills, he said this will enable these target group to better understand technology and to avoid from falling victim to scams.

At the event, Lee also handed over certificates of acknowledgement to collaborating industries and tertiary institutions.

“With this collaboration, we can assure that graduates produced by this college will be more competitive and ready to face the increasingly challenging world of work,” he said.

Also present were Higher Education Ministry (Department of Polytechnic Education and Community College) deputy director general Kamaludin Daud and college’s director Harmen Muda.
