SIBU (April 3): Continued community support remains vital to ensuring the sustainability and growth of Chinese education institutions, said Wong Nai Siong Board of Directors deputy chairman Datuk Chieng Buong Toon.

He acknowledged that operating Chinese independent schools has never been easy, citing ongoing financial constraints and structural challenges, particularly their position outside the mainstream national education system.

“We have faced many obstacles over the years, especially in terms of funding. Without the unwavering support from associations and the community, we would not have come this far,” he said in his speech at a fundraising dinner here on Wednesday.

Reflecting on the sacrifices of earlier generations, he highlighted how pioneers placed strong emphasis on education despite limited means.

He recalled his grandfather donating more than RM300 to a school in the past — a considerable sum at the time — despite earning a modest income.

“That spirit of valuing education should serve as an example for us. Our predecessors gave selflessly for the sake of future generations,” he said.

Chieng noted that the school is marking its 59th anniversary, attributing its longevity to the collective efforts and contributions of supporters who have given both financially and through voluntary service.

He also stressed the importance of preserving cultural heritage, describing it as the root of a community’s identity that must be nurtured across generations.

“Culture is the foundation of our identity. It requires continuous effort and dedication from every generation to sustain it,” he said.

Despite economic pressures and repeated fundraising efforts, Chieng said he was deeply moved by the continued generosity and support shown by attendees.

Also present were the school’s board of directors chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau and other board members.
