KUCHING (Jan 30): Consumers are encouraged to seize the opportunity to learn about their rights at the Borneo International Consumer Expo 2026, which is being held at the MetroCity Convention Centre, Matang, until Feb 1, said Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang.
He said the expo provides a valuable platform for visitors to gain a deeper understanding of consumer products and how to better protect themselves in today’s digital era.
“Not only is Borneo International Consumer Expo a platform for entrepreneurs to showcase their products and exchange views with their counterparts, it also serves to promote and enhance consumerism among the public,” he said during the opening ceremony yesterday.
Lo expressed satisfaction that the expo has successfully brought together various government agencies and corporate sectors to educate consumers about their rights across multiple fields, including the economy, culture, and tourism.
“Consumers today face heightened challenges due to online scams, misleading advertisements and product safety concerns.
“Therefore, it is crucial for them to possess a certain level of awareness to avoid falling prey to scammers and fraudsters,” said Lo.
According to him, the expo allows consumers to communicate directly with relevant agencies and obtain reliable information related to consumerism.
“This should help ensure a safer, fairer and more transparent environment for consumers,” he added.
Lo also noted that the expo offers an important opportunity for local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to promote their products, build networks and expand their markets.
He urged the public to attend the expo and render solid support to local entrepreneurship.
“Let us work together to cultivate a healthier consumerism culture among all, for the long-term benefits of the economy,” he added.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Consumers’ Association president Dr Wynson Ong acknowledged that consumers are facing higher risks of being scammed as digitalisation accelerates.
He pointed out that the rapid growth of online commerce, as well as the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and social media platforms, are among the reasons consumers must exercise greater caution.
Ong advised consumers to verify product sources and determine whether sellers are trustworthy before making purchases.
Among the government agencies participating in the expo are the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.
