KUCHING, March 5: Simunjan assemblyman Awla Dris has dismissed viral claims that the RM2.18 million Simunjan Esplanade roof project was abandoned or that contractors had fled the site.
According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), Awla said the project, implemented by the Simunjan District Council (MDS), is continuing as planned.
Most of the construction materials are being fabricated off-site and are scheduled to arrive on March 9, after which installation will resume immediately.
“The piling machines were removed because that phase of work has been completed. Cranes will now be used for the next stage of the project,” Awla reportedly said during a press conference today, clarifying reports circulating online.
He added that the project’s original completion date of April 6 has been revised to July 24, largely due to high demand in Sarawak’s construction industry and the simultaneous execution of multiple State projects. Local factories have to distribute production capacity across many contractors, which has affected delivery timelines.
Awla urged the public, particularly social media users, not to spread unverified information that could cause confusion, and appealed for patience while contractors complete the remaining work once materials arrive.
“The project is fully funded, fully managed, and moving forward according to plan. The public is urged to allow contractors space to complete the work safely and on schedule,” he added. — DayakDaily
