TELUPID (Jan 16): The Sabah government remains committed to supporting the organisation and celebration of various festivities as a platform to strengthen unity and harmony among members of its multi-ethnic and multi-religious society.

State Works and Utilities Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Joachim Gunsalam regarded fellow Sabahans ‘truly fortunate’, in that every celebration had always been observed together, regardless of ethnic, religious and political backgrounds.

“Celebrations such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year, Deepavali and Christmas are not merely religious or cultural events; instead, they serve as symbols of unity among the people of Sabah.

“Despite differences in political views, religion and ethnicity, we are still able to sit at the same table and celebrate these festivities together.

“This is the strength and uniqueness of Sabah,” he said at the Telupid Constituency’s 2025 Christmas Open House and 2026 New Year Celebration at IPS Telupid Hall.

In his speech, Dr Joachim also stressed about unity being the key towards ensuring that societal harmony would continue to be preserved.

“We must not allow existing differences to cause us to live in disharmony.

“Instead, these differences should be celebrated and used as a foundation for mutual understanding and respect for one another,” he added.

Earlier, the event’s organising chairman, Telupid assemblyman Datuk Dr Jonnybone Kurum, said the people of Sabah had proven their ability to live in peace and harmony despite their diverse backgrounds.

“This peaceful and harmonious condition is the uniqueness of Sabah.”

He also called upon all parties to set aside political differences after the election, and to focus on efforts to develop Telupid District.

“The election is over. Let us cast aside all ideological and political differences from the past campaign, and work together to develop Telupid District for the well-being of the people,” he said.
