MIRI (Oct 24): Police foiled an attempt to smuggle 2,000 litres of diesel worth RM6,700 during a raid in Bekenu yesterday.

Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said during the anti-smuggling operation dubbed ‘Op Taring’, a Region 5 Marine Police Intelligence Unit team stopped and inspected a single cab pickup truck in front of a supermarket at 1.30pm.

“As a result of an inspection of the vehicle bed, which was covered with a green canvas, it was found that there were two white tanks with a capacity of 1,000 litres each. Each tank contained diesel oil,” he said in a statement.

“The driver failed to produce any documented evidence of permission to possess, keep, or carry controlled goods without a permit, licence, or special permission from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN).”

He said the raiding team seized the 2,000 litres of diesel, believed to be subsidised, and the pickup truck worth RM65,000 as case exhibits, as well as detained the driver.

The seized items were handed over to the Miri KPDN investigation officer for further action.

The smuggling of diesel is an offence under the Supply Control Act 1961.
