KUCHING (Feb 28): The temporary custody of a six-year-old girl allegedly thrown into a drain by her father in Saratok will be determined by the court this Monday (March 2), said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

She said the Social Welfare Department (JKM), through its Child Protector (Pelindung) officers, has already intervened, with the injured child currently receiving treatment in hospital.

“Our Pelindung officers have handled the case and visited the child at the hospital.

“At this stage, we are waiting for the court order. The case will be brought to court on Monday to determine temporary custody,” she told reporters after the Bubur As-Syura and food basket distribution at Masjid Darul Hana in Markas Pasukan Polis Marin PDRM, Wilayah Lima, Bintawa here.

Nancy stressed that while the incident has sparked strong reactions, the child’s placement must follow due legal process, especially as the parents are in the midst of divorce proceedings.

“The court will assess who is fit and suitable to care for the child. In cases like this, it involves both parents, so the court must evaluate carefully before deciding,” she said.

She explained that the court’s assessment would include reviewing witness testimony, observing the demeanour of those involved, and examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“There is also a possibility that the father may be considered as a temporary guardian for the child.

“However, we cannot pre-empt the court’s decision. The court will also assess the mother’s condition and her capability — whether she is able to care for the child,” she added, noting that the case remains under police investigation.

Nancy also said JKM is monitoring the welfare of the victim’s five siblings to ensure they are in a safe environment.

“At this point, our Pelindung officers will continue to assess what more can be done, including evaluating who is able and suitable to care for the children.

“If there is no appropriate placement, they will be placed under JKM’s care. However, we believe there may be extended family members who can assist,” she said.

Emphasising that the child’s best interests remain paramount, Nancy said the court’s decision this Monday would provide clarity on the immediate next steps.

“Everything will be determined after the court’s temporary order. From there, further action will follow based on what is best for the child,” she said.

According to Saratok District Police Chief Mathew Manggie, the 43-year-old father was arrested following the incident last Wednesday, after the victim’s mother, who witnessed the act, lodged a police report the same day.

The suspect also tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine in a urine screening.
