KUCHING (Dec 12): A motorist has called for a full forensic investigation following a sudden unintended acceleration and brake failure incident involving her Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), which resulted in a total-loss crash in Song on July 31.

Lina Soo said her SUV suddenly accelerated from 32 km/h to 94 km/h within nine seconds along Jalan Takan, despite no input on the accelerator, while the brakes became completely unresponsive.

All four occupants, including Soo, were injured in the crash, which was captured on the car’s dashcam.

“Despite my formal requests on Nov 3 for intervention, both the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) have not taken action nor provided any response.

“I would like to call for transparency, accountability and urgency in seeking corrective measures for any regulatory lapse – this statement does not seek to assign unproven blame but to urge all parties concerned to take corrective action to protect the safety of the public on our Malaysian roads,” she told a press conference here.

Soo also sought explanations from the SUV’s manufacturer but disputed the company’s claim that foreign objects — a pair of sunglasses and a plastic bottle — caused the accelerator and brake pedals to malfunction.

She asserted that these items were not hers and said the manufacturer has yet to provide any technical or forensic evidence.

She further alleged that the manufacturer’s service centre performed an undisclosed Body Control Module (BCM) software update on her vehicle during routine servicing in September 2023 without informing her.

The BCM controls key safety-related functions, and Soo said the concealed update raises questions about possible prior knowledge of defects.

Soo is urging JPJ and Miros to carry out a full forensic analysis of her vehicle’s electronic systems, including event recorder data and brake-override functionality.

She also seeks clarification on the purpose of the BCM software update and any regulatory measures taken.

She said the crash continued to affect her and stressed the need for transparency and accountability to protect other Malaysian road users.
